Fruiting cherry trees are pruned while dormant. Cherries are a “stone fruit”, along with peach, apricot, nectarine, and plums, because of the “stone” (or pit) in the center of the fruits. Stone fruits are pruned to have an open center, sometimes also called “vase” pruning. Stone fruits are pruned to NOT have a central leader.
