Prune Like a Pro: Azalea

THIS IS AN UPDATE.  (Original video was shot in 2021).

Azaleas are a mounding shrub.  The overall goal of pruning is to reduce the size of the plant (if necessary) without destroying its symmetrical shape.  Thinning the shrub increases airflow and sunlight into the center – and will help keep your azaleas healthy.

The timing of pruning azaleas is important if you desire spring flowers. The best time to prune azaleas is within 6 weeks after flowers have faded.  If you prune in the late summer or fall, the shrubs will not produce the customary spring flush of flowers.
