Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a native, woody shrub suited for use in rain gardens. It belongs to the holly family (Aquifoliaceae) and is one of 30 species of deciduous hollies. Pruning focuses on ensuring airflow and sunlight into the center of the shrub. Winterberry is a dioecious species, meaning female flowers and male flowers grow on separate plants. To get berries on a female plant, a male plant must be near.
